Thursday nights ( some Sunday nights are exceptions..Jan.15 & Feb 19 ). This
special can not be combined with any other specials.

We’re looking forward to an upcoming musical event next month. The Hayes
Performing Arts Center in Blowing Rock is hosting the Winter Blues
Festival & John Cowan Band Jan. 27 & 28. We’re John Cowan fans, we’ve seen
him perform live many times and he’s recently been the bass player for the
Doobie Brothers. We have tickets to see him Jan. 28th at 7:30 pm. Tickets
can be bought online at www.hayescenter.org . On stage the night before John Cowan plays Atlanta,Georgia blueswoman Beverly “Guitar” Watkins will wow the crowd.

Grandfather Mountain Highland Games bed & breakfast

There is an ancient connection between the Scottish Isles, The Baird House bed and breakfast and these Appalachian mountains. John Baird left his ancestral home in Scotland in 1650 and sailed the Atlantic to New Jersey. 135 years later John’s grandson, Ezekiel Baird, traveled from New Jersey with his wife settling in what is now Valle Crucis building their home which is now the Baird House Bed and Breakfast inn ( the oldest house in the county ) near Boone, NC. As time progressed more people of Scottish & Irish ancestry settled in this area bringing with them a culture rich in music and tradition.

Probably the most influential family in this part of the Blue Ridge is that of Hugh MacRae who, in the late 1800’s bought & developed land in and around Grandfather Mountain. Following his death his family was instrumental in starting what is now one of the largest gathering of the Scottish clans in the world. The Grandfather Mountain Highland Games is a 4 day celebration, beginning July 7th, of music, food, sporting events and dancing. Make your plans to attend the games and make your reservations to stay at the Baird House, a Grandfather Mountain bed and breakfast, a 20 minute drive from the games.

Our community is looking forward to Musicfest ‘n Sugar Grove this July 8th & 9th. This is the 14th year of this musical celebration. Held at the Old Cove Creek School in Sugar Grove, NC this features Doc Watson, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, the Kruger Brothers and a list of many others. Food, drinks and games for the kids will be available. The Doc and Merle Watson Folk Art Museum is on the grounds of the festival & a festival ticket allows one free admission. The Baird House bed and breakfast, winner of TripAdvisor’s 2011 Certificate Of Excellence, is approximately 5 miles from the event location & currently has rooms available. Beginning Friday May 27th at 7pm the Music in the Valle music series kicks off in Valle Crucis Park behind the Mast Store Annex/Candy Barrel. There’s plenty of free parking and there’s free admission. Bring a blanket, folding chairs, the kids ( or not ), a picnic and some adult beverages then enjoy a time with great local musicians.

Well known for her Mitford book series, many of which were written in her Blowing Rock home, Jan Karon will be the star celebrity of the “Return to Mitford” event as a fundraiser for the Hayes Performing Arts Center. Highlights of this celebration include morning lectures and luncheons with Jan Karon ( the lunch menus will include recipes from the Mitford Cookbook and Kitchen Reader ). The Very Best Blackberry Pound Cake Recipe

No words can describe how terrifically delicious this cake is…

6 TBSP blackberry juice…1PKG white cake mix…1/2 cup milk…1/4 cup of water…3/4 cup of oil…1-3 OZ blackberry jello…4 eggs at room temperature.

Combine all ingreds. except eggs then add eggs one at a time. Beat at medium speed for 2 minutes. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Cool 15 minutes before removing from pan.

Blackbery glaze: 6 TBS. blackberry juice…1 cup of powdered sugar…1/2 cup of softened butter. Mix all ingreds. in oven proof bowl then place in pre-heated oven at 300 degrees for 2 minutes. Spread over cake.
